He always made really great (beautiful) stuff.

I had his wizard skin running, with the moving character screen and all of the new spell icons. It was awesome. I also loved the look of his UI. It had an ice theme to it. At least the wizard one.

I wonder if we could get this going for EQC?

So my custom UI was something similar to this. While it's not the exact same, it does give you a good frame of reference.

He does really good work.

Yes I remember all of the custom UI skins that appeared on the scene after the Luclin UI came out. I always used a modified version of the "Vert UI" (I think that's what it was called), and I remember there being many other good ones on the old EQ Interface site. That one you posted an image of is really nice looking in particular.

However, you'll have to remember that the XML based UI which all of the skins were made for was released during Luclin and actually replaced the old classic EQ interface. One of the things that makes EQC so special is that it is using a real classic client. That means support for the new UI isn't there at all, and thus no skins. We will all be using the original Velious UI (or the really old school stone box UI if that's your thing hehe). I personally kind of like it that way. As much as I liked being able to change skins around, the old UI was much less of a pain in the ass (ug... hate XML). The only feature I'll really miss is being able to do multiple chat windows and redirect all of the combat spam rather than just disabling it all.

There were actually skins that replicated the original UI's, though as you can imagine they weren't popular.

I know a UI beyond the Velious interface isn't going to happen, but people having an issue with the notion of it being available (and I'm not saying that you're one of them Tiiden) are just misguided in my book. As long as there is no competitive advantage which basically forces everyone to adopt it (the argument could be made that there is one), how does it really impact me if another player is using a UI that I personally do not like? It doesn't.

The same goes for character models. As long as no one is forced to look at your ugly-as-sin Luclin era models, I don't have any problem with you staring at them all day.

A UI that offers no more information than can be obtained via the old interface is fine. If it offered any actual advantage over another player, I could see having a problem with it.

It's like in the original Tribes game. Some people cheated and used huge flag models instead of the defaults so they could see them through walls and such.

But yeah, what somebody does w/ their UI is none of my business, as long as they aren't accessing information that isn't available to a normal client.

To be honest, I didn't remember what era those custom UI's came out. I could have sworn that I had something somewhat custom in Velious. I remember sitting in Wakening Land looking at my UI and thinking what I could do to modify it and "trim it down".

I also had my HP/Mana show % as well as actual number.

It would be like... "7794 - 100%" right on top of the mana bar.

Ya, I know what you mean. The newer UIs were far superior to the Velious UI when it came to features and extra information. Unfortunately all of that extra UI information was added much much later. When the new interface came out, it didn't have a whole lot of new features (maybe just the pet window and the compass?). For anyone who quit after LDON or beyond there will be alot of stuff missing. Just being able to see the actual number value for your mana wasn't added until well after PoP.

For me though I don't think having all that is really necessary to enjoy the game. Loading up with that old UI for the first time in over a decade will be a huge nostalgia trip I'm sure!

I can remember the only custom UI skin I used when they were available was one that added your exp bar to the box containing your hp/mana/stamina. I can't remember whether the blue line on the exp bar (showing progess through the current gold "bubble" of exp) was a custom thing or whether it was part of the actual UI but was added later, or was in the game since the old UI. I even kept all my windows in the same positions they'd been before the new UI came into play, since that was what I was used to. And I only had one chat window the whole time as well :D.

I've always been a fan of a single "chat window" as well as a "combat window", so my text doesn't scroll off too fast.

I hated cluttering my screen with countless other windows that I wouldn't use.

As a caster, I suppose I'd've had no need for a combat window anyway - if I was soloing, there'd be no melée attack damage coming up because there wasn't any being done (except by the pet), and even if in a group I'd've probably been too far back to see the messages anyway. I just had any melée tells turned off except those being done by me or to me, though I'd still see crit messages and backstabs (or at least, backstabs done by the pet once I was using the Rogue one - can't remember if PC Rogue BSs came up on my screen too, on the fairly rare occasion that I was actually grouped with a Rogue).
About the only other channel I think I ever had turned off was the Auction channel, unless I was (very rarely) actually looking to buy/sell/trade something in the trading zone of that server. And I'd turn off OOC as well if I was hunting in a zone while a raiding party (of another guild) was present. This was before the addition of stuff such as Raid chat, obviously ;).

I had a combat window for a few reasons. To see the damage of my nukes was the biggest. Making sure they didn't resist or what not, so I'd quickly change to a spell that worked.

The other was, I usually played with my sound off, so it would alert me if I was getting hit from behind.

Well, I also liked to melee things a lot. I was a Melee Wizard. LOVED when I got that Primal Velium Brawlstick, which went perfectly with my Gauntlets of Dragon Slaying (omg haste!)

That's all.

I was never spammed out in my chat window to the extent that I couldn't see a bright red resist message. Nukes weren't roo much of an issue as I didn't use them much, and of course DoTs didn't report damage until much later on. I think each tick always hit for max damage anyway, if the spell hit - some DoTs, like the Darkness line (in fact, maybe only the Darkness line, due to its snare factor) could drop early but I think they still did max damage for the ticks that they hit.
I couldn't play with the sound off - I like to feel immersion and I can't do that if I'm running around fighting mobs in silence (this goes for any game - it just feels horribly deteched from me if I have no sound) :(.
