To say that those who turned so violently against him aren't ingrates is just semantics. I think it's safe to say that Yeahlight is considerably more dissapointed in the outcome than any of us would be. To be viscerally abusive toward him for reaching out for suggestions on custom content is immature to say the least. Coming from a community that until now showed such respect for each other, it was surprising. It continues to be surprising really. Many voiced their dissapointment without stooping to such levels.

Why sad? That kind of stuff didn't make me feel "cool". It is clear my post was not taken correctly.

The charitable cause? I would have done that without the whole "every hour I put in" stuff!

My comment about my posts and moderator status were simple, not sad:
If I knew that this whole project's success depended on a company to provide some guy, because to SOE, that is what YL is, with the Database, then I would have never taken this so seriously!

We haven't heard the YL = Hara conspiracy theory in a while. Maybe he's just consolidating profiles. Hara is Randall Stevens from the Shawshank Redemption. He only exists to host the server somewhere offshore but when the feds show up he will be no where to be found. Meanwhile YL can focus on his other endeavors legally and play on the server anonymously and no one will be the wiser.

Well, I've obviously been gone for a little while, as well. This is, indeed, sad news for me, but not the end of my world... not even close. I must admit that I have no idea how I could even play the game now; since I started to follow EQC I've gotten married and have three kids! (yes, we are stopping!)

Yeahlight, it's been fantastic to see the work you've put in. I appreciate it, and I apologize for not having been forthcoming with compliments. Too many people stand by with expectation and only voice up when there is a problem. I will endeavor to be free with glad tidings for even just the nostalgia!

I also understand about throwing in the towel. Yes, you can work for decades on a plan, then one day it all changes and you must re-evaluate your work. I did this with my first publication, and I understand now that the right thing to do with it is shelf it for now and dedicate my hours to something more fruitful. In the future I can return to it when I have the resources in place to make a quality second edition. I've shifted my focus; that doesn't make me a quitter.

The same for your work (which, unless you are drawing a salary and benefits package) I understand to be GRATIS. Do I hope to see an EQC? Sure, but I'm pretty thrilled with what could shake up out of EQ Next and Shroud of the Avatar, too. More important for me is that you find a passion to pour your incredible skills into, and that you drop by and let those of us who pop by from time to time know how you are doing.

Trolls will be taking a "victory" lap for a few weeks imo. Yeahlight always had a lot of detractors.

I am eager to see Harakiri's take on a custom server though.

It might be time for a new website if they are going to commit to the custom route though. New name / forum might fit a custom game better than EQClassic.

I'm sure something could be devised that shows "the projects" adherence to classic EQ mechanics.

Also, more banning of idiots. They aren't needed now or ever.

I'm not someone who frequents the EQClassic site/forums often. I know it is a volunteer project and it is done in the spare time of the developers. So, I just swing by every now and then to see how things are going.

I was shocked by this announcement and that certain individuals can end up being so shallow. Unless any one of those who complained were willing to take up the torch, learn to program, and put the effort into the work, they really shouldn't have been so critical.

Yeah, it stinks that a custom world had to be created but, guess what, it still would have had all of the same game mechanics as Classic EQ and it prevented any potential legal conflicts with SOE, who don't want their IP infringed upon. Would everyone rather have a DMCA Takedown notice or to have the project confiscated by the authorities.

Now, one out of the two main developers has abandoned the project due to people complaining about what the project had to do in order to survive. Some could complain about the thickness of someone's skin but, guess what, we don't know and will NEVER know the contents of those private messages, nor how many they were. all we DO know is that it was enough to make someone who devoted 5+ years of their life to a project stop and say that it wasn't worth it. It means it was enough to kill the passion and the dream in someone's heart. THAT is a tragedy.

I don't come here often, maybe every 4-5 months. Yeahlight is quitting because he was getting emails about what the game should be? Wtf. Developers get that kind of crap all the time. Yeahlight take some advice...

1. You do not have to listen to what other people say.
2. This is your project, you can do whatever the hell you want with it.
3. People are stupid especially en masse.
4. Contemplate on what the point of your project was
5. Create whatever you want and if it is good, people will play.

Community take some advice...

1. You do not always get what you want
2. A true classic server without soe consent is stealing
3. Don't think another persons work is yours (goes back to point 2)
4. Don't whine
5. Grow the F up.

Jaylafein take some advice....
1. No one probably cares what you think
2. Stop trying to resurrect a dead game
3. Focus on real life and leveling that up
4. Get money f*ck B*tches
5. Check back in 5 months.

C. Obligatory amateur software developer tantrum and subsequent "I quit" scenario.

After being on the net since 1994 20 years of experience have taught me betting on "C" NEVER fails.

I see someone is still bitter that I refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of their unqualified opinion on IP law.
