Posted on old forum. Bringing it back. :)

Following information was taken, and altered, from http://eq1.eqsummoners.com/. Information was checked to ensure "classicness".

PET STATISTICS (Focused stats are in brackets if they are different):

At level 8 pets gain the bash ability. At lvl 12 all pet attacks become magical. At lvl 20 all pets gain kick, parry, double attack and riposte. At level 24 all pets can Duel Wield with weapons. At level 39 all pets can Duel Wield without weapons.
Fire pet damage shield is equal to = (pet level) + 2
**

Water Pet:
Below 50, Water is the most well-rounded of the elementals, containing average stats across the board. Below 50 it casts Water Elemental Attack. Water is nearly immune to poison attacks, making it an excellent pet to use at low levels for this reason.

Type Spell Level Damage HP Special Damage Regeneration
Water 4 12 72(84) 7 6 HP/tic
Water 8 16 195(227) 10 6 HP/tic

******************************************************************************************************************

Monster Summoning Pet:
Monster Summoning I, and II are an oddity to be sure. To start, they are given the illusion of a monster in the zone they are summoned in, everything from a snake to a Sand Giant. They fall around Earth pet in terms of HP, and cast SumMonsterAttack.

Type Spell Level Damage HP Special Damage Regeneration
Monster 34 34 ? 30 6 HP/tic
Monster 50 56 3200 42 30 HP/tic
Monster 60 60 3300 49 30 HP/tic
******************************************************************************************************************

Specialty Pets:

Dyzils Deafening Decoy:
Summons a pet that has High HP and AE Aggro abilities. The downside is that it is a lower level (40), and a lower damage pet then those available at lvl 56. It does cast the generic Fire Pet damage shield. (Fire Pet Model)

Rage of Zomm:
Killer eyeball of death. Does much higher damage then similar level pets. It does not have enough HP to last more then 2 hits from an even con mob. It will despawn once it's threat list is empty (no more bad guys).

Type Spell Level Damage HP Special Damage Regeneration
Decoy 56 46 3150 50 + 100Hate 30 HP/tic
Zomm 55 75+ <400 NA 0 HP/tic

******************************************************************************************************************

Epic Pet:
Manifest Elements, more commonly known as the Epic pet, is the reward for the Magician Epic Quest. It's summoned by equipping the Orb of Mastery and right clicking the orb. When summoned it takes the appearance of an Air pet, but does not render itself invisible.

The pet itself is a beast. It's got massive hit points, very high melee damage, casts the damage shield Aura of Elemental Mastery (50 points of damage), procs thru melee Elemental Mastery Blast (143 points of damage), and casts the DD/stun Elemental Mastery Strike (84 points of damage).

You can summon the Orb of Mastery as early as level 46, but you cannot use Manifest Elements until level 50.

Type Spell Level Damage HP Special Damage Regeneration
Epic 50 81 4000 34 / 143 6 HP/tic

**************FOCUS ITEMS*******************

There are 4 Minor Focus items: Focus level 4 to 49 pets:
These four focus items are obtainable via quest from the gnome magician Vira within the Temple of Solusek Ro located off of the Lavastorm Mountains zone. You must have at least indifferent faction standing to quest the minor focus items.
*from level 34 to 49 the pets will appear visibly larger when focused

Torch of Alna (Minion of Fire)
Quest Items: Fire Drake Scale, Fire Emerald, Fire Giant toes, and a Torch from the Magicians in Najena or Alligators *inside* Cazic Thule
Effect: Increases the Fire pet's overall characteristics to match an unfocused Air, including HP.

Shovel of Ponz (Minion of Earth)
Quest Items: Gargoyle Eye, Ruby, Hill Giant toes, and a Shovel from the Magicians in Najena or Alligators *inside* Cazic Thule
Effect: Increases the Earth pet's overall characteristics. However it does not increase HP.

Broom of Trilon (Minion of Air)
Quest Items: Griffon Feather, Star Ruby, Cyclops toes, and a Broom from the Magicians in Najena or Alligators *inside* Cazic Thule
Effect: Increases the Air pet's overall characteristics to match an unfocused Water, including HP.

Stein of Ulissa (Minion of Water)
Quest Items: Mermaid Scale, Sapphire, Ice Giant toes, and a Stein from the Magicians in Najena or Alligators *inside* Cazic Thule
Effect: Increases the Water pet's overall characteristics to match an unfocused Earth, including HP.

There are 4 Major focus items: Focus level 49 to 60 pets.
They all increase their corresponding pet's level by 1 and increases the pet's HP, and increases the melee attack by 2.

The first three are rare drops from the listed MOBs.

Staff of Elemental Mastery: Water (Servant of Water): Phinigel Autropos in Kedge Keep

Staff of Elemental Mastery: Earth (Servant of Earth): Magi P'Tasa and male Forsaken Revenants in Plane of Hate (Used to only drop from Inny).

Staff of Elemental Mastery: Fire (Servant of Fire): Magi P'Tasa and Mistress of Scorn in Plane of Hate.

The Staff of Elemental Mastery: Air (Servant of Air) is a quest reward in the Plane of Sky. This quest uses the Crown of Elemental Mastery which is also used to complete the Magician Epic quest and obtained on Isle 7 in the Plane of Sky. Due to the rarity of the item it is believed only one of these staffs was created prior to the introduction of the Epic Quest.

What all did you change to make it classic? I'm not sure all of that information is entirely correct. I distinctly remember that water pets had substantially higher resting HP regen than the others in classic. Using the wayback machine, I found an old version of the Mage Compendium site:

http://web.archive.org/web/200211301203 ... ndium.com/

Use that, and click on "pets" in the menu bar. You'll see that under the water pet it talks about them having higher HP regen. I'm not sure why it was left out of the new charts, but I'm guessing that it was probably copy/pasted and never changed. Everyone else remembers this right? Or am I crazy?

The site also says Earth Pets do the most damage. Is that correct? The data on that table I presented wasn't actually Classic data, just 'recent' parsed information regarding the 1-60 pets. I didn't think where would be any significant change to pet HP, damage, etc during the years. I remember them staying relatively unchanged.

Good question, Jify. I was under the impression that mage and necro pets were nerfed a couple times early on (i.e. they were stronger at launch than they were by the time Kunark came out), and then buffed a couple times later. All I can turn up in the patch history is a fairly vague reference to "high-end" (presumably, 50+) pets being buffed during Luclin, though:
Quote:
5/9/02: Addressed a balance issue with high end Magician and Necromancer pets by improving them. (Half of this change went live last night but was missed in the previous patch message.)"

http://www.tski.co.jp/baldio/patch/20020509.html

Too bad the old Magician's Tower boards seem to be gone - I'm sure it would have been possible to dig up any relevant changes, if indeed there were any, over there.

I know i leveled up using the fire pet. The damage shield was always so much more than the one we could cast at those levels. being level 40 and having your pets damage shield be 42 was awesome! Mobs would simply just beat themselves to death on it.

Awesome Info!

Was it really true that Water pets backstabbed? and there was an ongoing rumor that a pet could cast ice comet? i doubt it... but can anyone dispute this. Also, does anyone know if pets could enrage, berserk, use any sort of disc or class ability? Just curious... I only played a mage after statflation in Omens of War (so needless to say I have no clue as to what their capabilities were).

water pets could backstab, no they could not cast ice comet like the wizard spell but a normal low dmg dd ~200 - the fire pet for example, the air pet had a stun spell

Most of the stuff you are referring to is from post-classic times.

When they did the NPC spell AI improvements the level 58 fire pet temporarily gained the ability to cast ice comet if summoned with a Staff of Elemental Mastery: Fire focus item, and you were lucky and got the highest level pet (it would be level 49). If I remember right they removed it in a patch pretty soon after, due to complaints from wizards. I believe the fire pet from PoP later gained the ability to cast ice comet all the time, but I don't remember exactly...

As for your other questions: in classic Magician pets had no special abilities aside from their innate resistances and the spells they would cast. Enrage, etc were all added later. Don't get too down about it though - pets in classic were still very powerful. In fact, after the Velious era ended Magician pets only declined in power relative to content (the balance got REALLY lopsided after PoP), despite all the extra abilities. The classic era was definitely a good time to be a Magician.

Yeah Magicians are quite the power house class. I do believe fire pet had the best physical damage of the 4. It had very high attack power and as a result hit for its max most of the time. It was in my opinion the best pet until Kunark. That said most Magicians used Earth pets to solo anything of consequence Ei: Ghoul arch-magus comes to mind. Water pets post 39 had absurd regeneration out of combat. Within 30seconds it would go from 10percent to full, quite ridiculous.

That list posted above is rather accurate, some things are wrong (like Earth pets having the highest atk, that honor goes to the fire line).

I don't know about you guys, but I found the water pet useles for solo after level 20. I personally ran around with the earth pet most of the time.
