How useful do you all imagine alchemy will be now that we are back in classic?

I think getting skill high enough for SoW potions is a no-brainer but after that the gate/port potions are expensive and difficult. The blistering flesh potions aren't great. Really, alchemy was altered to become a lot better.

And yet, I will definitely be an alchemist, if for no other reason than because I am a shaman and it's an awesome idea, hah.

SoW potions were a gods send back in the day. I remember paying 50pp per 5 shot potion. That was an automatic item before I went out doing what ever I needed to be doing that day/night.

initially in vanilla EQ alchemy was useless and broken, here the original receipe list

http://web.archive.org/web/200006190558 ... lchemy.htm

then with the patch http://www.tski.co.jp/baldio/patch/20000217a.html shortly before kunark, alchemy was revamped and the first real useful potions like SoW and gate potion (1000p for melee each if i remember) were created http://web.archive.org/web/200006190558 ... tility.htm

Just how expensive was alchemy? A lot of those ingredients I have no clue where to get so they must be vendor bought or dropped from something strange.

Best as I remember (and it could well be faulty :) ) the components for alchemy were dropped and some purchased from a vendor at your shaman guild. I think the herbal bought components were fairly expensive for classic.

Component placement...
The success rate for creating potions is much higher if you have the material component on the topmost left slot of the medicine bag, and the herb on the right. I have tested this (at much expense) and never seem to succeed if I reverse the placement of the components.

that is interesting, is that with alchemy only or all mixing skills?

On my monk I remember always having SoW and Invis potions. Other than that I don't think I used any, maybe a gate once or twice.

I think you are missing some of the potions. I know before Luclin there were other potions like Lesser and Greater Rejuvenation etc.

Check out http://web.archive.org/web/200008312347 ... index.html (archived from July 11, 2000). I hope alchemy is useful and includes all the potions up and through Velious :)
